High-Performance
Idler Gear Bushings
Idler gears operate under some of the harshest conditions in any powertrain: high RPM, heavy radial loads, shock loading from gear meshing, and frequent lubrication starvation during cold starts. A failed idler bushing means catastrophic gear train damage, unplanned downtime, and costly engine teardowns. JBM is an OEM-grade manufacturer of idler gear bushings — purpose-built to survive the punishment inside diesel engines, industrial gearboxes, and high-performance transmissions.
Where Idler Gear Bushings Are Critical
From Class 8 trucks to racing transmissions — every application demands a specific material and surface treatment. Here's what we supply.
Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines
Timing gear train idler bushings, camshaft drive idler gears, accessory drive idler assemblies. We supply OEM-grade replacements compatible with major engine platforms.
Automotive & Racing Transmissions
Reverse idler gear bushings, layshaft idler bushings, transfer case idler assemblies. From OEM production lines to aftermarket race builds.
Motorcycle & Powersports
Transmission idler gear bushings for off-road motorcycles, cruisers, and ATVs. High-RPM tolerance with compact dimensions for tight gearbox housings.
Industrial & Mining Gearboxes
Reduction gearbox idler bushings, conveyor drive idlers, and timing gear assemblies for heavy-duty industrial equipment operating under extreme loads and contamination.
Bushing Position in Idler Gear Assembly
The idler gear rotates freely on a fixed shaft (idler pin). The bushing sits between the gear bore and the shaft, absorbing all radial loads from gear meshing forces. Without a proper bushing, metal-to-metal contact leads to rapid wear, seizure, and catastrophic gear train failure.
Key Engineering Requirements
- High fatigue strength — cyclic loading from gear mesh forces
- Anti-seizure properties — critical during cold starts with oil starvation
- Precise OD/ID tolerances — tight press-fit into gear bore
- Oil retention — surface grooves or pockets for splash lubrication
- Thermal stability — operating temps from -40 °C to +150 °C typical

Four Material Families for Every Idler Gear Application
The right bushing material depends on your load, speed, lubrication regime, and environmental compliance requirements.
Bimetal Bushings
Steel Backed + Sintered Bronze Lining
The workhorse for engine idler gears. The sintered bronze lining on a steel backing delivers high fatigue strength and excellent anti-seizure properties under oil-splash lubrication. Diamond or ball-indented oil pockets extend re-lubrication intervals.
Steel Backed PTFE Composite
Steel + Sintered Bronze + PTFE Sliding Layer
Ultra-low friction under oil lubrication. The PTFE/fibre sliding layer provides a self-lubricating safety net during cold starts and lubrication starvation events. Excellent for high-speed transmission idlers where minimizing parasitic drag matters.
Solid Cast Bronze + Graphite
C86300 High-Tensile Brass with Embedded Graphite Plugs
For extremely heavy-duty or low-speed idler applications where shock loading and contamination are severe. The embedded graphite plugs provide self-lubrication without oil dependence. Ideal when conventional lubrication systems are unreliable.
Steel + AlSn20Cu Lining
Aluminum-Tin Alloy on Steel Backing
The OEM choice for modern automotive engine bearings and high-speed idler applications. The tin-aluminum alloy provides exceptional fatigue resistance at high RPM, excellent conformability, and superior embeddability for trapping foreign particles. Lead-free by nature.
